I’ve always been a bit suspicious of black socks. They just seem like they would be more likely to cause foot odor. After all, they absorb more heat than other colors, so it stands to reason that they would also be more likely to cause sweating. And we all know that sweat is one of the main causes of foot odor.
But after doing some research and consulting with my doctor friends, I found out that the material of the socks is actually more important than the color. So even though black socks might be more likely to cause sweating, it’s not actually the main cause of foot odor. The real culprit is usually the material of the socks.
Do Black Socks Smell Worse Than White Socks? – The Scientific Explanation
Before we go deeper into black or white sock debate, let’s have a quick-peek into what science says.
Based on the light spectrum, When we see the color of an object, it actually means that it is reflecting only that color of object and absorbing all other colors. So if we see green grass in our eyes, that means that grass is only reflecting the green color of light to our eyes and absorbing all other colors.
Also, the more light an object absorbs, it means the object has absorbed more energy (or we can say heat). In the color spectrum, we can see that black objects absorb all other color (i.e. all wavelengths) and reflects nothing, so the absence of reflected light is ‘black’. The opposite happens for white objects as they reflect all wavelength, in turn, all lights. So scientifically, black objects absorbs most light, in turn, ‘heat’, if we apply same amount of light on different colored objects.
So, it is obvious that black color of sock has some part to play when it comes to the temperature of your feet. Though the significant is not that much, but scientifically black socks make your feet temperature relatively higher that white socks.
Also increased temperature in feet means increased sweat, and more chance of developing bacteria – which is the main culprit of bad feet odor or stinky smell.
So What’s the Role of Sock Material In Feet Odor?
Umm..I’d say ‘major role’.
Though we’ve discussed about color spectrum, heat absorption and other things in previous paragraph, I’d like to say that’s like 10% of the causes for bas feet odor due to black socks. The material of your socks is the main culprit for your feet odor, irrespective of the color the socks have.
If socks are made of synthetic materials like polyester or nylon, they tend to trap sweat and bacteria, which can lead to foot odor. So even though I’m still not a huge fan of black socks, I now know that they’re not really any worse than other colors when it comes to causing foot odor.
If you’re looking for socks that won’t cause foot odor, look for socks made of natural materials like cotton or wool (not in summer obviously). These materials will absorb sweat and help keep your feet dry, which will prevent bacteria from growing and causing foot odor.
Are Black Socks Bad For Your Feet?
Generally speaking, no. Black socks are not bad for your feet. In fact, they can actually be good for your feet in some situations. For example, if you’re wearing closed-toe shoes in the summer, black socks will help absorb some of the heat and keep your feet cooler than if you were wearing white socks.
While you are at home, it is advised by the health professionals that you keep your feet open. Let your feet skin to have some light, like the plants need sunlight, your skin also needs light, especially sunlight for replenishing Vitamin D and other health benefits.

If you live in a hot climate or tend to sweat a lot, consider using an antiperspirant on your feet before you put on your socks. This will help keep your feet dry and prevent bacteria from growing.
Another important tip is to choose the right sock material. As we mentioned earlier, choose cotton or woolen socks over synthetic materials like polyester and nylon to avoid trapping of sweat and bacteria, the main culprit for foot odor.
Also. make sure you wash your socks regularly. Bacteria love to grow in dirty socks, so if you don’t wash your socks often, they’re more likely to develop foot odor. If you have any concerns about the color of your socks affecting your feet, try washing them with small amount of vinegar. This will help remove any build-up of sweat and bacteria that could be causing foot odor.
Can You Wear Black Socks With White Shoes?
Here comes the styling with black socks part.
The short answer is: yes, you can wear black socks with white shoes. In fact, black socks can actually look quite stylish with white shoes.
This actually depends on personal taste, and sometimes few other facts like – stains on black socks are less visible that white ones, hence they need less frequency of washing. Although from the healthy practice – you shouldn’t wear socks that already have sweat on it, black or white.
For Styling – the key is to choose the right type of socks and style them in the right way. For example, you wouldn’t want to wear ankle socks with white sneakers – this would look more like a weird and casual style. Instead, try wearing knee-high or thigh-high socks with white boots or heels for a more put-together look.
If you’re going for a more casual style, pair black socks with white sneakers and jeans. This is a great everyday look that is both comfortable and stylish.
On the other hand, you won’t want to see yourself wearing white socks with all black tuxedo and shining black chukka, right?

How to Wash and Dry Black Socks to Avoid Feet Odor?
Washing black socks is pretty much the same as washing any other type of socks. The main thing you want to avoid is Bleeding Dye.
To avoid this, you can either hand wash your socks in cold water or machine wash them on a gentle cycle with cold water. If you’re machine washing your socks, be sure to use a color-safe laundry detergent to avoid fading.
